About

A little about me and what I do

Before becoming a web designer, I was a bookseller and an English language teacher.   Websites are not unlike books – full of wonderful stories, but in need of an attractive cover and a clear layout to draw in the reader.   I design clean, easy to use sites, build or customize small-scale applications and content management systems, organize and edit content.

I can help you think through your priorities – will the newest coolest widget really bring you more business, or is it just a fancy time suck?   How do you organize and pare down your information so users stay satisfied rather than leave frustrated?   How will your site be found on the web?   How will you keep content fresh without making your website your job?

My toolbox includes: xhtml, php, .net, css, jquery, mysql, xml, javascript, flash actionscript. XML or mySQL data-driven pages and forms are a lot of fun to work on.   I can create html emails by hand or with tools like Convio or Webmonkey, set up sites and templates for contributer management tools like WordPress, Adobe Contribute, Microsoft Expression.   I am well-versed in federal accessibility guidelines, usability standards and SEO optimization.   I am skilled at creating eye-catching web graphics using Photoshop, Illustrator or whatever you have installed.   Finally, never underestimate the power of great communication and organizational skills, project management chops, and encyclopedic knowledge of old song lyrics and strange science facts and half-truths.

Update: Sorry, I am not taking any new clients right now!!

A note about WordPress:
WordPress started out as a blogging platform but has grown into a wonderful tool to build and maintain a website.   I am a big fan of WordPress as a cheap, easy way to manage content.   And it just keeps getting better!   This portfolio is done in WordPress, using a commercial template I customized – saving me a heck of a lot of time, and making it a snap to update.
